Come on out to the SoNo Park Holiday Fest from 11am - 5pm this Sunday, December 4, 2011, to visit Laurasaurus Designs (and our sister company, Hester Crown Jewelry). It will be held here in San Diego on Thorn Street, in between Herman and Bancroft (yep, shutting the street down!). There will be lots of amazing local crafts, a chili cook-off (vegan chili available!), tons of craft beer (they’ve got kegs from Stone, Pizza Port, Ballast Point, Rock Bottom, Karl Strauss, and my personal favorite, Green Flash) and wine, and live bands!!! And it’s all about the kids! The event is being held to benefit McKinley Elementary School’s art and music programs, so this is guilt-free shopping at its finest! Check out the Holiday Fest facebook page too!

the che cafe benefit show last night was fun! here is a photo of the plateaus merch. i made the 1” buttons shown and can do custom orders of your own design/whatever for you too if you would like!
plateaus is a san diego-based band, composed of members jon greene (drummer and amazing producer and recording artist, not to mention one of the best people in the entire world), kevin gist (guitarist and vocalist, also one of the greats - see my post for his birthday below), elliott moeller (bassist) and chris rosi (guitarist and vocalist), both super solid dudes themselves. think 60s-pop-esque but still punk… catchy, garage-y, jesus-and-mary-chain-y, vaselines-y. recorded in san diego institution electric orange studio (run by jon, kevin, and tommy garcia, currently of northern towns, mrs. magician, and drug wars).
here’s a review of their beach coma 7” (look at that awesome artwork!), which is available for purchase through their label, art fag recordings. check them out on their bandcamp site. oh yeah, and here’s their write-up in NYLON!!

tonight there is a benefit show for the che cafe. the che needs to make an insurance payment or it will be shut down, and we can’t let that happen!!! now, if you have never been to the che cafe, it’s an activist venue and it’s pretty magical - you’re walking through the ucsd campus and all of a sudden you feel like you’re in a cabin in the middle of the woods. even fox news (yep, you heard right) called it a landmark. the first time i went there i saw pretty girls make graves with my friend jared, with whom i have long lost contact. jared, wherever you are, THANK YOU.
i’ve been to the che countless times throughout the years, seeing such a range as gasoline please and the plot to blow up the eiffel tower to minus the bear and q and not u to mr. billy corgan! i can’t even tell you what it meant to me one night when a cursive show was sold out but i hung around and was let in for free when a few people left - being that close to tim kasher when i was 16 was worth more than anything.
so come out tonight! there’s now-big-time-boys crocodiles, the heavy hawaii dudes, and, my personal favorite (yes, i’m biased, but not only are they all great guys, they make amazing music), plateaus! on a laurasaurus-related-note, i made plateaus some buttons.
please check out the che cafe benefit tumblr page - the show tonight is not the only effort by any means. here is also some news regarding this: city beat, reader (from the union-tribune), and fox.
see you there!

berkeley

i’m sitting in a coffee shop right now and they’re playing modest mouse and it’s making me think about seeing modest mouse play at the great american music hall in san francisco when i was a freshman in college at berkeley. isaac brock was drunk. i know, i know, who would have thought?! he forgot lots of words. it’s been one of those days of nostalgia. design*sponge also happened to post an article today that i read this morning about all of these amazing spots in berkeley that i miss.

i started laurasaurus designs in my apartment in berkeley during my second year there. it’s kind of funny for me to think about how i got started. it really began because i was spending so much money on jewelry supplies and had to find a way to keep being able to get more! all of this is giving me the urge to get a baubles and beads fix asap! berkeley look out!

records everywhere!

i’m super excited because yesterday i picked up some amazing record charms!!! i haven’t found any in quite some time so this is awesome! i’m thinking earrings, but feel free to let me know if you have other suggestions. they should be up on the website in the next few days. and it works out so perfectly, because today is the swami record swap here in san diego at bar pink. i’ve got records on the brain!!!!

this post is in honor of my friend kevin. happy birthday kg! he is the best pizza-maker ever and one time long ago i made him pizza cuff links. but he does much more than that too, like give me a run for my money at ping pong. anyways, he is super awesome and i am excited that it is his birthday! also, click here to see these earrings on my website… c’mon, this stuff serves multiple functions! ;)
